Re-Entry to Recovery

Nature50

Re-Entry to Recovery creates a pathway for companies with a legacy of deforestation to return to sustainable markets. Through measurable ecological restoration, social compensation, and responsible practices, businesses can repair the past while building credibility for the future. R2R proves that recovery is possible—for companies, communities, and landscapes alike.

Re-entry to Recovery (R2R) is an intervention model designed to provide a recovery pathway for companies with a history of deforestation. While NDPE policies and global regulations have largely focused on preventing future risks, the legacy of historical deforestation often remains unaddressed. As a result, many companies face a paradox: on one hand, they seek re-entry into premium markets that demand sustainability; on the other, their past records keep them excluded.

R2R addresses this dilemma. Through structured mechanisms of ecological remediation, social compensation, and measurable ecosystem restoration, companies are offered a pathway to repair past harm. This approach reframes historical deforestation not as an “irreversible burden,” but as an opportunity to strengthen sustainability commitments through tangible action.

More than simply reopening market access, R2R enables companies to rebuild credibility—anchored in responsibility and restorative action. Each hectare restored, each social program implemented, and each renewed commitment fulfilled becomes evidence that recovery is an integral part of building sustainable supply chains.

Within Nature50’s broader framework, R2R demonstrates that sustainability is not only about preventing future deforestation, but also about acknowledging and addressing past impacts. In doing so, R2R helps restore landscapes and communities while reinforcing the integrity of global markets.

Key Steps of Re-Entry to Recovery

Re-Entry to Recovery (R2R) is a Nature50 model that provides a recovery pathway for companies with a history of deforestation. The goal is clear: to turn accountability for past harm into opportunities for restoration, climate action, and social justice.

Step 1 – Re-entry: Acknowledging and Initiating Change
Re-entry is the gateway back into sustainable supply chains. Companies must acknowledge their past impacts, halt any further forest clearance, and make transparent commitments to NDPE standards. Through this recognition, they earn a renewed license to operate and rebuild trust with markets.

Step 2 – Recovery: Restoring and Demonstrating Commitment
Once re-admitted, companies must prove long-term commitment through measurable action: restoring lost forests, rehabilitating peatlands, enhancing biodiversity, and providing fair social compensation to affected communities. Recovery must be real, inclusive, and sustained over decades.

From Liability to Legacy

Re-Entry to Recovery (R2R) transforms liability into legacy. Companies are not only reconnected to markets but also repair reputations, reduce global carbon emissions, and restore ecological functions at the landscape level. For international markets, R4R demonstrates that sustainability is not only about preventing future harm, but also about confronting and repairing the past to build a more just and resilient future.
